Week of Feb 16-20

We are exactly half way through the marking period. Progress reports were sent out on Friday so be on the look out for your grades in the mail. This week we are going to continue looking at strategies to solve linear equations. In regular math we will be focusing on equations such as 2x+3=4x+9. In honors we will review this concept on Tuesday and then will move into Shapes of Algebra.

Monday Feb 16th:
1st-6th hours: Questions, Binder Check, and Quiz Revisions (revisit solving equations)
7th hour: Week 4 Pre-Test & calculating tax (B&P3 Investigation 4.1)

Tuesday Feb 17th: All hours: Introduce Stem Cell Project
1st, 5th, 6th hours: Say It With Symbols 3.1. In this investigation students will continue to develop strategies for solving linear equations. Today we will focus on equations such as 5+ 2(3 + 4x) = 0
Homework: pg 46 #4&5
4th hour: Solving Equations involving multiple steps. After students finished their quiz yesterday, they began working on some more intense solving equations problems. Today they will finish their work. Tables will be responsible for representing one problem on chart paper and explaining their solution to the class.
Homework: pg 46 #4-7
7th hour: Yesterday we began talking about sales tax. Today students will be fininding the sales tax of various items. They will be taking their understanding one step further and seeing if they can find out the original price of an item given how much the sales tax was. (B&P3 Investigation 4.2).
Homework: Calculating Tax Wksht

Wednesday Feb 18th: (Guest Teacher in the a.m.)
1st, 5th, 6th hours: Say It With Symbols 3.2. In this investigation students will be given data about the costs to tile a square swimming pool. They will have to use the equation, table, and graph to find out when the costs are equal. They will then apply their understanding to more general equation such as 20 + 3x = 5 + 8x.
Homework: Solving Linear Equations extra practice wksht - due Friday
4th hour: Shapes of Algebra 2.1/2.2. Students will begin the investigation by looking at a graph and determining when the cost of one company is greater than the cost of another. We will then move into solving linear inequalities and developing rules to solve such equations. In this investigation students will be looking at the effect adding, subtracting, multiply, or dividing has on an inequality.
7th hour: Today students will be working as a group to create a menu of items. Students will apply their understanding of percentages to figure out sales tax and how much they should leave for a tip. Students will develop strategies for quickly finding how much they should leave for a tip, no matter the cost of their meal. (B&P3-4.2)
Homework: Finding Percentages Practice

Thursday Feb 19th:
1st, 5th, 6th hours: Shapes of Algebra 2.1. In this investigation students will be given the cost for security from two different companies. They will look at the graphs and determine when the equations are equal and when one is less than another. This will set the stage for solving linear inequalities tomorrow. Quick Test: Using inequality signs appropriately.
Homework: pg 30 #1
4th hour: Investigation 2.3. In this investigation students will be solving linear inequalities and graphing the solution.
Homework: pg 31 #8-11
7th hour: We will continue working on applying percentages. Today students will be trying to find bargains. The will be calculating not only sales tax but multiple discounts on items. (B&P3 4.3)

Friday Feb 20th:
1st, 5th, 6th hours: Shapes of Algebra 2.2. In this investigation students will explore how various operations effect linear inequalities. This will set the stage for actually solving linear inequalities next week.
4th hour: Shapes of Algebra, Investigation 2 Reflection. Students will be reflecting on how to graphically and symbolically solve equations.
7th hour: Students will take a post test (on the navigator) on finding percentages as it relates to sales tax and discounts on items.
